The problem for many people when it comes to green cleaning is how to begin. They look around their house and see all the chemicals they’re using in their daily life, and wonder how they can replace everything in their cabinets without going nuts, or going broke. The answer is simple: make small changes, one room or even one product at a time. Here are some tips.
Take an inventory: go through your home and make a list of the cleaning, deodorizing, and disinfecting products you use on a daily, weekly, or monthly basis. Products you use one in a while, even if they’re more toxic, are probably not as important to replace as the ones you use every day.
Do some research: It’s not hard to find the non-toxic equivalents to common household products. Method, Seventh Generation, and Ecover products are available at many major retailers, and dozens more companies are making great products available at health food stores or at online shops like the Village Green Market. An Internet search will pull up hundreds more sites, as well as links to articles and studies.
Price check if cost is a concern: Many non-toxic cleaners actually cost less than their brand-name counterparts – but a few may cost a little more. To save some green, look for generic or store- brand non-toxic cleaners, like Whole Foods’ 365 brand. You may also find coupons for products through your local health food store or online.
Replace one product at a time: You don’t have to toss everything in your cleaning arsenal all at once. In fact, I don’t recommend that you do. When you run out of your normal glass cleaner, laundry detergent, floor soap, etc., just replace it with its non-toxic counterpart. It's that easy!
